Construction on a much-anticipated rail link to Bulgaria recently started. Until it’s complete, a north-south train line runs from Belgrade, Serbia to Thessaloniki, Greece via Skopje. So those cities are your two best options. Athens, Greece, therefore, makes a smart arrival point from Australia.
Otherwise, you’d be looking at a meandering route of local trains and/or buses, which once in North Macedonia, pretty much all lead to Skopje. I like searching on Omio for open-ended transport riddles.
I’m very jealous. I haven’t spent much time in that part of the world. EuroExperto HQ expects a full trip report!
