One of Rome’s most historic pubs, L’Antica Birreria Peroni (Ancient Peroni Brewery) waits to quaff your thirst just a stone’s throw away from many major attractions. Now, even though it’s technically neither ancient nor a brewery, this place is cool. Built in a former firehouse, this centrally located gastropub has been going strong since 1906. Fashioned in wood-and-timber Bavarian beerhall style, L’Antica Birreria Peroni blends German and Italian influences into one of Rome’s more unique dining establishments.
What’s On Tap? Peroni, Of Course
L’Antica Birreria Peroni specializes in, you guessed it, Peroni beer. Peroni, along with Moretti, is one of Italy’s most ubiquitous beer brands. Although originated in Vigevano, Peroni has been produced in Rome since the 1860s. On tap, choose from the standard lager Peroni Nastro Azzurro or step up to the award-winning, double-malt ale Peroni Gran Reserva and the 100% Italian malt Peroni Gran Riserva Rossa. They also pour a Fuller’s London Pride for all you Anglophiles pining for the corner pub.

By the way, there is a Peroni Beer Museum (Archivio Storico e Museo Birra Peroni) in Rome at Via Renato Birolli, 8. Call in advance to book a free weekday tour.
German Or Italian? You Decide!
In keeping with the Bavarian feel of L’Antica Birreria Peroni, you’ll find a mix of both traditional Roman and German fare on the menu. The most famous item is the “kilometer sausage”…which is exactly what it sounds like. Also, try L’Antica’s take on German goulash. For local cuisine, consider ordering the pasta carbonara, Roman tripe or pork beans (fagioli all’uccelletto).
